The Nordic Way

A number of countries and regions around the world are seeking to provide all children with accessible, affordable and high quality early years provision. The Nordic countries have developed policies for universally available ECEC supporting family-worklife balance, gender equality and social equity.

Child wellbeing, play and childhood are the core of the Nordic Way, with a strong emphasis on supporting child agency and active participation and exploration. Spanning all years from birth to primary schooling, children are offered integrated full-day services that combines education and care.

The conference provided a political and professional forum. It allowed for interaction and discussions between participating policy makers, researchers and teacher representatives on highly relevant topics for ECEC development such as play, inclusiveness, professionalism and parental and community involvement.
